Pendragon Book One: the Merchant of Death by D.J. MacHale
Imagine what it would be like to discover you aren’t the person you thought you were.
Bobby Pendragon is not your typical teenager. One night, before an important basketball game, his Uncle Press urgently asks for his help. Bobby reluctantly goes with him, not realizing he is at the beginning of an adventure that will take him to another world called Denduron. He discovers that he is a Traveller who can travel to different worlds and that he has an important part to play in saving the people on Denduron from their evil overlords. Bobby encounters “Quigs”, strange and nasty creatures that try to kill him; an evil Traveller named Saint Dane who wants to destroy Denduron and upset the balance in the universe; and adventures and narrow escapes in every chapter. The book’s sections alternate from Bobby’s adventures in Denduron to letters written to his friends Courtney and Mark that are sent by a magical ring. Of course this makes you want to read through the book quicker to get to the ongoing adventures. At the end of the book, Bobby does make a difference and discovers much about himself and his talents as a Traveller. If you enjoy this book you’re in luck because there are several more books in the series.
Pendragon is a story that took me some time to get into. At first I found the plot seemed unrealistic and didn’t make sense, however after a few chapters I warmed to the characters and found myself engaged in the Bobby Pendragon’s nonstop series of adventures. Some of the characters were typical of the good versus evil theme of many fantasy books. Yet I did enjoy the action scenes and plot twists and how the author often left you on the edge of your seat. For example, Bobby, his uncle, and his friends are in a huge arena and are about to be eaten by a gigantic, ferocious Quig. How can they escape? Bobby finds a way. I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy fantasy adventures with nonstop action.
I would give this book a 6.5 out of 10.
